1.      Check out the local facilities. Choose an area with good local transport links, leisure facilities and public services close by?

2.      Do you need a garden?

3.      Does it have storage? – although when moving from a larger home to a smaller one you will need to be fairly ruthless when it comes to decluttering – The best way to tackle it, is to write up an inventory list and label everything with an option: Keep, Sell, Donate or Throw

4.      Does it have adequate privacy?

5.      Is it ready to move into?

6.      Is it low maintenance?

7.      What is the neighbourhood like? Visit the local shops and eat out at the local pub/restaurant.

Downsizing works best if you are open-minded about regions, as a more affordable location could ultimately allow you a cheaper new home and much improved lifestyle.
